National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month

December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month. As we near the holiday season, it is important to note that driving while under the influence of drugs is a problem in America . This is a good opportunity to alert parents to research showing teens are nearly as likely to drive under the influence of marijuana as alcohol.

One of the most anticipated milestones in a teen’s life is obtaining a driver’s license and young drivers are already at risk for car crashes due to the combination of driving inexperience and distractions, such as having additional passengers in the car, eating, and talking and sending text messages on cell phones.

Research indicates that far more teens report using alcohol (17 percent) than marijuana (7 percent) in the past month although teens are only slightly more likely to drive under the influence of alcohol than marijuana; in one study, 13 percent of high-school seniors reported driving while high on marijuana, compared with 14 percent who reported driving drunk.
